This past weekend I was a little under the weather so I found myself on Prime looking for a quiet movie ( no gunshots) that I could watch and turn my always on brain OFF. I am an avid watcher of mysteries and trying to guess the killer can be a very active part of “relaxing”.
I came across The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and started in. First, let me say that I realized, or hoped, that even though I’m not the demographic its aimed for I did relate. The movie is about retirees moving toIndia for an of outsourced Senior living facility. ( I thought, great idea) It answers the question in an moving and uplifting way of what do you do when you’re retired, alone and your plan for the golden years isn’t what you planned? How do you cope? What do you do?
The movie goes on and gives us a Hollywood ending to all the characters…of course. I enjoyed the movie but I was drawn to the Sonny Kapol character. So the thinking didn’t stop. 🙂
It All Starts With a Dream
Nothing happens unless first we dream – SonnyTweet
Here’s a young man who is going after his dream of running a hotel that has been in the family for years. His dream started with his Dad. Unfortunately, his father passed and left the hotel to his sons. The other sons owns a mansion in Delhi and the other is Canada so they’re not invested in the dream and would prefer to get rid of ot..
I say it starts with an idea. But, I’m not sentimental. But’s let go Hollywood and yes, it begins with a dream.
Anyway, Sonny is portrayed as a more enthusiasm than skilled business owner. But when I heard of his idea I thought what a great idea. India became known as the outsourcing king when I started in IT so why not a senior living facility. That is where we start as entrepreneurs? We start with the idea. Most of us have more enthusiasm and optimism than skills. But it’s the dream that fuels us. It’s the same with Sonny.
Sonny : I have a dream, MummyJi, a most brilliant one. To outsource old age! And it is not just for the British, there are many other countries where they don’t like old people too!The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
It’s hard when you’re success depends on the people you want to support you the most. In this case, his family. His brothers want to pull the plug and take their money. His mom wants to stop her son from wasting time and money. He just wants a chance to show what he can do.
Mrs. Kapoor : Do I need a reason to visit my favorite son?
Sonny : No – he’s at his mansion in Dehli.
Mrs. Kapoor : Alright, my second favorite!
Sonny : He went to Canada to make his fortune. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
As I watched I kept wanting Sonny to stop getting in the way of his own success and just do it. Yes, we’ll make mistakes, sometimes huge ones, but everyone says that’s part of the process.
Do We Get In Our Way
It’s also hard when you can’t see the problem. If you can’t see the problem than how do you fix it. If we become to close the problem sometimes we can never see it. When I saw Sonny’s office I knew his issue was operational. No way you can grow a business with a sloppy desk! But we get used to the clutter, the state of mind and we don’t realize that its getting in the way of success.
This is the time you need to hire my good friend, Shona Barnes, Founder and CEO of Call Your Admin. She will help you create the business processes and get organized.
Because this was a movie, Sonny failing was part of the drama but I really routed for him. I wanted him to stop being so self-deprecating in an overly confident way and make it happen.
I wanted his guests to love their stay. I wanted them to tell their friends. I wanted him to make a profit. I wanted him to be successful. As I want all of us to be successful.
As I watched Sonny give in to the negativity of his support system, complete with dramatic music, I wanted him to snap out of it. He needed to remember the day his dream started and how he got up that day and started to make his dream come true.
No Spoiler Alert
I won’t tell you what happened except to say there was a sequel to this movie. The stakes are higher against Sonny in this second one. He’s still the same but he’s so much smarter.
That’s the lesson for us in this movie. Stay true to your dreams but be prepared to pivot ( that’s for business and the Seniors who have to come to the hotel). Last, when you’re down and struggling try to remember the dream and the feeling you had when it first came to you!
We got this!
