The Leading with Purpose Podcast is Here

I am blessed. In this entrepreneurial journey, I have had the opportunity to meet many special people. Special people with interesting stories that inspire me to aim differently if not higher and to think laterally about the world. The commonality among them seems to be that their mission and vision are the driver of their success. They “Lead with Purpose”.

My journey continues with the Leading With Purpose podcast. We are interviewing leadership experts and coaches from every area of life. Their outlook and audiences are diverse. The conversations touch on what leadership is and how it shows up in our lives. What I like most about these conversations is that they ultimately will show us all a roadmap to live our lives with purpose.

To Have Leaders Do You Need Followers?: The Leadership Coaching Industry

I have to tell you I am fascinated by the leadership industry. It may be because of my work with The What Now Movement and its team, but I started to feel that the world is separated by coaches and those who need coaching. What is the leadership paradigm? In today’s world and the ease of getting your message out in the world coupled with the ease of preaching to the choir, what makes you a leader? Is it as simple, you are a leader because you have followers. In business, are you a leader because you have employees?

Should the leaders’ purpose be the driving factor of who and why we choose to listen to them? I think so. First, let’s look at the reasons for the leadership industry. I found these statistics from 2022 on GO REMOTELY :

  • A whopping 79% of employees will quit their jobs due to lack of appreciation from leaders.
  •  69% of Millennials believe there is a lack of leadership development in the workplace.
  •  Only 15% of women have board of director roles in the workplace.
  •  91% of Millennials will stay in their jobs for fewer than three years.
  •  83% of enterprises believe it’s important to develop leaders at all levels in a company.
  •  Only 5% of companies have integrated leadership development in their corporations.

These statistics say it is the need driving the industry. Somewhere along the line, a disconnect happens. From the excitement of the first day to being a valued employee to recognition of becoming a leader in the company something changes. Has the mission promise of the organization become lost in its success? Have your customers started to complain? From my days as the lead in employee communications, I saw the value of keeping your employees informed and motivated.

As founders, we are the de facto leader in our companies. We need to recognize our employees’ desire to excel and succeed at every point in their careers. If not, we will lose the creativity, time, and resources spent on bringing employees to believe in the mission, the purpose of the company. Recognition is the first step. The next is deciding the type of coach we and our employees need.

How to Identify the Type of Coach You Need

Our first episode was with Dr. Gary Crotaz and it really helped me see the value of coaching. His specialty is executive coaching and the questions he asked of us and those we asked him were really insightful. It was so insightful that I asked to meet with him and once again had a wonderful conversation. One of the questions I asked was, “How do you know if you need a coach?” Next, “What type of coach do you need?” He explained that along with coaches, there are therapists, mentors, consultants, training, and athletic development. You can find the differences in this document from the International Coach Federation.

Reading further, the time for a coach is when you need help visualizing and accomplishing your goals, need an accountability partner, and, or be positive reinforcement that gives you the freedom and knowledge to accomplish your goals.
